New Rwanda-SAKSS Annual Report Released

September 11, 2012

ReSAKSS is pleased to announce the inaugural Rwanda-SAKSS annual report, Trends in Key Agricultural and Rural Development Indicators in Rwanda,in tracking the country’s progress towards CAADP implementation, produced by Rwanda Strategic Analysis and Knowledge Support System (SAKSS) node. The node was established as part of the post-Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) compact activities to provide technical assistance to implement the country’s agricultural investment plan. The Directorate of Planning of the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) serves as the host of the Rwanda SAKSS node.

Agriculture, which contributes more than 34% to the GDP and employs 80% of the Rwandan population in 2009, has been recognized as the main driver of economic growth and poverty reduction in Rwanda. As the first nation to sign the CAADP compact, Rwanda has been at the forefront of implementing CAADP agenda by allocating 10.2% of its national budget to the agriculture sector for the fiscal year 2010/11 and achieving an average annual growth of 7.4% in 2010.

The reportpresents a comprehensive picture of the agricultural and rural development in Rwanda towards achieving the Vision 2020 goals and Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy (EDPRS) targets, the first Millennium Development Goal (MDG1), and the implementation of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) compact in the country. To facilitate monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of agricultural policies and investments in the nation, the rigorous analysis is developed by a team of experts involved in generating, managing and analyzing secondary data from a variety of local institutions in Rwanda under the supervision of the coordinator of the Rwanda SAKSS Node.
